The Story Behind Grand-PALs
Grand-PALs was born from a deeply personal experience.
Founder TJ Griffin created the company after carrying a quiet regret for many years—missing the opportunity to spend meaningful time with his childhood best friend, his grandmother Esther Griffin, whom he lovingly called Nan.
When TJ was 19, Nan suffered her second stroke and could no longer live on her own. She moved from her apartment into a nursing home called Conestoga View.
“All of a sudden, it became extremely hard for me to see her there,” TJ recalls. “I loved her so much, but I just couldn’t bring myself to visit the way I should have.”
What made it even harder was that the nursing home was visible from behind TJ’s house. Every day he could see the building on the skyline. At the same time Nan moved into the facility, TJ’s aunt gave him Nan’s old car as his first vehicle. For three years, he drove that car past the very building where the woman who had loved him so deeply now sat, often alone.
TJ only visited a handful of times during those years.
“Even today it haunts me,” he says. “I sometimes imagine her thinking, ‘TJ, why don’t you come see me?’”
As an adult, TJ realized he wasn’t alone. Many people struggle to visit loved ones in nursing homes because seeing someone you love frail, bedridden, or changed by illness can be emotionally overwhelming.
But the loneliness seniors experience is very real.
TJ began asking himself an important question: What if someone had been there to visit Nan regularly? Someone to play games, share stories, make her laugh, or simply sit with her.
Those reflections became the foundation for Grand-PALs.
Grand-PALs exists to ensure that no senior spends their later years feeling forgotten or alone. Through compassionate companionship and meaningful visits, Grand-PALs brings connection, dignity, and joy back into the lives of seniors.
For TJ, the mission is deeply personal.
Grand-PALs is dedicated to the memory of his Nan, Esther Griffin—whose love helped shape his life and whose story inspired a mission to bring companionship and joy to seniors everywhere.

TJ Griffin grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was labeled a “troubled youth” and became involved in the juvenile justice system at a young age. After years of navigating that path, he made a life-changing decision in his late 20s to leave that life behind and build a better future.
He went on to work in the same system that once held him, becoming a staff member, supervisor, and later board member at Manos House, a juvenile residential program. Alongside this, he gained experience in the music industry as a recording artist manager.
In 2012, TJ founded The Vision Program, delivering youth programs inside detention centers and training professionals nationwide. He became a certified trainer and a recognized voice in juvenile justice reform, later delivering a TED Talk, “The Paper Plane Effect.”
In 2018, TJ was cast in the lead role of the film CHOICES: The Ron James Story. A faith-based production based on a true story of hope and redemption. The film was created specifically to inspire incarcerated individuals facing hopelessness.
He also launched The Pop-Up Shop in Lancaster—a creative retail space that gave teen entrepreneurs, artists, and small businesses an affordable place to sell their products and learn how to run a storefront, quickly becoming a hub for the local creative community.
In 2021, TJ co-founded Creative Hope Studios with Jose “Flex” Rios, transforming spaces inside juvenile facilities into music studios and creative labs. What started during COVID quickly grew into a national movement, becoming one of the leading creative programs in juvenile justice.
In 2026, TJ launched Grand-PALs after carrying a deeply personal regret—missing the chance to spend meaningful time with his grandmother during her final years in a nursing home. Knowing how many seniors face that same loneliness, he created Grand-PALs to ensure others don’t. The company connects compassionate retired adults with isolated seniors, bringing connection, dignity, and joy—while also providing supplemental income to retirees.
Through all his work, TJ has shown commitment to restoring dignity, creating opportunity, inspiring hope and strengthening human connection across generations.
